Obituary for Daniel Bertram Dorey

Daniel Bertram Dorey
Daniel Bertram Dorey
Age 88 of Fox Point, our Dad and husband passed away at South Shore Regional Hospital July 8, 2018. Born in Hubbards, he was the son of the late Almon and Jemima (MacLean) Dorey. In earlier years, Dad worked as a mailman for RR#1 Hubbards for 20 years, followed by 20 years at the Hubbards Post Office. He lobstered up until his late seventies. He also was a projectionist at the Hubb Theater for many years. During his lifetime, he and his wife were caretakers for dogs, cats, goats, geese, rabbits, hens and even a talking crow. Up until his last days, not a crumb was thrown out, it went to feed the birds. He also had a penchant for carpentry. He built the garage, added rooms to the house, built the swing sets, an outside hockey rink and the list goes on. A great childhood for us. Dad's spare time involved lots of hockey and baseball, playing on local teams with his brothers. He was known as one of the better pitchers in the area, back in the day. He was church warden for St. James Church and sung in the choir as well. He sang at home often, but if he forgot the words, he always had nonsensical lyrics to replace the actual ones. A sense of humour we will never forget. His humbleness and common sense advice were qualities that endeared him to all that knew him. In a nutshell, Dad lived a great life and we cherish that. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, the former Olive Lerch. His daughters, Sharon, Northwest Cove, Linda (Paul Wakeling),Calgary. His sons, Scott,Halifax and Harvey, Florida. Granddaughter Melissa (Andrew Chan). One brother Arnie. He was predeceased by his son, Danny Jr., sisters Audrey, Shirley and Cathy, brothers Herbie and Tom. A half brother Clarence. Dad's body was donated to the Dalhousie School of Medicine. Dad requested no funeral. At a later date, Danny Sr and Danny Jr will be interred together at the Fox Point Cemetery. Donations can be made to St. Luke's Parish. Special thanks to Dr. Jim McLean for keeping Dad's body running in his later years. It was a privilege to be there for Dad in his last years as well as his last day, as he was always, always there for us.
