Obituary for Daniel Sinclair Smith

With great sadness, we announce the passing of Daniel Sinclair Smith on Wednesday, March 27, 2019, in Arborstone Enhanced Care, Halifax. Born in Halifax he was the son of the late Albert and Bertha (Trueman) Smith. He was a lifelong resident of Tantallon having married his wife Ruth of 61 years, built his home on Whynacht’s Point Road, and raised four children. He enjoyed camping, gardening, bonfires, and singing his favourite songs. After travelling and working in many provinces, he began his own contracting company renovating and upgrading homes and businesses in the area. He was the busiest man having volunteered for many organizations including the Lions Club, Tantallon Centennial Athletic Club, and TASA Minor Hockey. He coached and played softball and hockey for many years. His dream was to have a rink built in the area and in 1975 he and others began the fundraising. In 1988, the St. Margaret’s Centre opened, and following renovations for the Canada Winter Games, the City of Halifax honoured his efforts by naming the original ice surface after him, “Smith Ice”. He lived a happy, fun, fast-paced life and will be missed by all. It was no secret that he was an avid Montreal Canadiens fan and he watched them play and win right to the end. Go Canadiens! Survived by his wife Ruth (Boutilier); sons, Danny Jr. (Tara), Lewis Lake; Andrew (Trudy), Tantallon, daughters, Karen (Jeff) Snelgrove, Tantallon; Charlene (Guy) Arsenault, Stillwater Lake; grandchildren, Vanessa, Brian, Aaryn, Janica, and Connor; great grandchildren, Mariah and Ryder; brother, Cyril, Tantallon; sister Evelyn Rafuse, PEI.
