Obituary for Donald R. Arnold

ARNOLD, Donald R. - 71. It is with deep sorrow that the family announces the passing of a beloved husband, father and grandfather, on May 17, 2006, at his home in Hubley. Born on March 1, 1935, in Buffalo, New York, Donald was the son of the late Walter William Arnold and the late S. Mable (Fairley) Arnold. He married his high school sweetheart, Janet Karol (Price) Arnold, on September 10, 1955. In the following eight years, Donald and Janet had six children. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary last year with a family reunion that brought together their extended family, which now includes 10 grandchildren. Donald was particularly proud of his family and took tremendous pleasure in seeing them together. He was pleased with the sense of community he had found at St. Luke's United Church in Tantallon, and loved the beautiful home he and Janet had created in Lake of the Woods. Donald had an illustrious career as a research chemist and university professor. His career began with a B.Sc. in 1957 from Bethany College, West Virginia, and a Ph.D. in chemistry in 1960 from the University of Rochester, New York. As a research chemist at Union Carbide in the 1960s, Donald became a pioneer in the field of organic photochemistry. In the 1970s, he was an esteemed professor at the University of Western Ontario, and in 1980 he moved to Nova Scotia to become a Killam Research Professor in the Department of Chemistry at Dalhousie University. Donald received numerous awards and honors during his career, including the prestigious McLeod Chair in 1991, and held important positions in many organizations, such as president of the Inter-American Photochemical Society and Director of Organic Chemistry of the Canadian Society for Chemistry. Donald's publications numbered over 120 and, in 2003, the Canadian Journal of Chemistry published a special issue honoring his contribution to organic chemistry. Donald retired from teaching at Dalhousie and became Professor Emeritus in 2000. He was an internationally-recognized leader in his field, as was acknowledged by the presentation of an Honorary Ph.D. in chemistry from his alma mater at Bethany College in 2005. In honors of Donald's devotion to Dalhousie, to teaching and to the study of chemistry, a scholarship has been established in his name. Donald is survived by his beloved wife, Janet; his children, Douglas (Katherine), Gregory, Mark (Denise), Bradley (Gianna), Randall (Rosemary), and Lindsey (Shafik); his grandchildren, Taesha, Tonya, Christopher, Brandon, Ashley, Kali, Molly, Kellen, Kalim, and Grace; and sister, Suzanne (John) Olson. A memorial service and reception will take place at 2 p.m. on Monday, May 22, in St. Luke's United Church in Tantallon. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Dr. Donald Arnold Scholarship in Chemistry at Dalhousie University (contact the Office of External Relations at Dalhousie). Funeral services have been entrusted to Ronald A. Walker Funeral Home, Tantallon. On-line condolences may be sent to:
