Donald E. West
100, of New Minas formerly of Bedford, passed away peacefully on Monday, May 20, 2019 in the Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville with Barb and John by his side. Seven weeks short of his 101 Birthday. Born in Brampton Ontario, in 1918, Don graduated from High School, attended McMaster University and joined the Army and served in Canada and Overseas, he was discharged in 1946 as a Captain. After being discharged he worked as a food salesman for 6 years, first in Ontario, then transferred in 1950 to Nova Scotia as Maritime Supervisor. In 1953 he entered the restaurant business in Bedford. During his 6 years in Bedford he served on the Bedford Service Commission. In 1959 he opened the Flamingo Restaurant in Halifax which he operated until December 1981. During these years he was very active in the what was called then the Canadian Restaurant Association becoming President of the Nova Scotia Branch and a member of the National Executive. He also served for 8 years as a Board Member of the Nova Scotia Hospital and was active for many years in the Canadian Horse Shows Associations becoming President of the Nova Scotia Branch. He took part in the formation of the Canadian Equestrian Federation serving on the National Executive, later becoming National Secretary before retiring from the Board. Kelowna, B.C.; daughter, Barbara (John) Cox, New Minas; stepsons, Neil (Jean) Hughes, Head of St. Margarets Bay; Harold (Suzette) Hughes, Bridgewater; John (JoAnne) Hughes, Upper Tantallon; Brian (Holly) Hughes, Burnaby, B.C.; grandchildren, Dr. Bill (Andrea) West, Vancouver, B.C.; Jill (Dr. Jon) Brock, North Vancouver, B.C.; Brittney (John Forrest) Bonin, Calgary, AB; Sarah (Tim Conway)Bonin, Greenwood; step-grandsons, Tom Hughes; Hammonds Plains; David Hughes, Upper Tantallon; step granddaughters, Christine (Steve) Napierala, Thunder Bay, ONT; Rachelle (Byron) Berk, Boston, Mass.; Jennifer Gaskell, Halifax; Selina Hughes, Upper Tantallon; Jenna (Dale McKinnon), Sydney, Cape Breton; Jillian (Travis Forest) Cox, Caledonia; several great grandchildren and step great grandchildren. Predeceased by his parents, William and Carrie (Bedford); first wife, Rita (Gendron); second wife, Lillian Audrey (Locke/Hughes); brother, Wilbert.
