Obituary

Donna Thomas-Mattholie
It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Donna on Thursday, February 6, 2020 at age 72, surrounded by her loving family. Donna was born in St John’s, Newfoundland to parents Grace (Baldwin) and Leonard Whiffen. Donna is survived by her loving husband, Ray; daughter, Sheila Thomas; sister, Diane (Bill) Luedey; grandchildren, Sam and Sage; nephew, Bill (Heather) Luedey; niece, Michelle (Sheldon) Lucas; Aunt Annie and many cousins. She lived and worked in Toronto until 1992, then moved to London and later Hong Kong before settling in Glen Margaret. Donna was a life force who made an impact in every relationship and role-she was renowned for her quick wit, high standards and leadership. In every aspect, she strove for and encouraged excellence in and from others. She loved to garden and was a certified floral arranger; was a master cook and was in her element entertaining. She was a tireless volunteer- Church Warden in both England and Glen Margaret, She has ministered to the most marginalized and vulnerable—leper colonies in China; babies in foster care in Hong Kong, the incarcerated; counseled in rape crisis centers, marched for victims of violence and was a relentless advocate for women’s and senior’s services. She made a better place wherever she went. Donna loved the arts- opera, plays, music, fashion and interior design (!!), had an insatiable zest for literature and travel- as she was about learning and seeing how people lived. She was a champion of the underdog- literally with the biggest soft spot for dogs and especially for her own beloved spaniels, Guinness and Boddington and many before. A heartfelt thank you to the Cardiology team at QE II who provided comprehensive and compassionate care. We are grateful to Rev. Brianna for her prayers and support. A memorial for Donna will be held Friday February 14, 2020 at 11 AM at St. Paul’s Church, 71 St Paul’s Lane, French Village, B3Z 4E3 followed by a reception at Paul’s Hall, 12286 Peggy’s Cove Road, Glen Haven, B3Z 2R6 In lieu of flowers, donations in memory can be made to the QEII Foundation in support of heart and stroke care, or to help2overcome.org .
