Obituary for Floyd Lee Coolen

Floyd Lee Coolen
Age 99, passed away peacefully January 7, 2023 at Northwood Ivany Place, Bedford. Born July 9, 1923 at Fox Point, NS he was the third child of Frederick and Jennie (Longard) Coolen. Floyd began his working career as a member of the Coolen Family inshore fishing crew in Fox Point. He felt a call to church ministry and eventually left fishing to attend college and prepare for the pastorate. Unfortunately ill health forced him to leave school before completing his studies. After his return home he and Annie Blakeney of West Jeddore married. Floyd became an apprentice electrician, progressing steadily through the ranks in his chosen field, ending an illustrious career retiring as the Chief Electrical Wiring Inspector for the Nova Scotia Power Corporation many years later. Throughout his life he never wavered in his love for God and was a dedicated member of the Seventh-day Adventist Church, serving as a lay elder and preacher, Bible study leader and resource person in several local congregations. He also served as a member of Seventh-day Adventist church regional and national conference boards and advisory committees. In association with Professor Ken Hill he led and promoted many Five Day Plans to Stop Smoking in the Halifax area. As a skilled amateur photographer Floyd left a treasured visual legacy of generations of family events and people. His enthusiastic golfing kept him fit and active well into his retirement years. Always the life of the party, Floyd was never at a loss for a pun to lighten any situation and he was a warm and welcoming host to family and friends. Floyd was a member of a musically gifted family and played a number of instruments, covering a range from penny whistle to piano accordian to acoustic and Dobros guitar. He was known for his fiddle playing and delighted in musical sessions with his sister, Marie Soper, as his piano accompanist. Floyd was predeceased by his parents, beloved wife Annie (Blakeney), brother Sanford, and sisters Violet (Coolen) and Marie (Soper). He is survived by nephew Reid (Margaret) Coolen, Fox Point and nieces Nancy (Donnie) Harnish, Mill Cove and Myrna (Don) McAnally, Salmon Arm BC as well as many relatives in the extended Coolen and Blakeney families in Nova Scotia and Ontario. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Ronald A. Walker Funeral Home, Hubbards. Cremation has taken place. No visitation by request. Private family committal will be held at a later date.
