Obituary for Frederick Harold Witherall

Frederick Harold Witherall

Age 80, Deep Cove. With broken hearts we announce the passing of our much-loved husband, father, and grandfather on Saturday August 27th 2022. Fred was born in Fortune, Newfoundland on July 15th, 1942 to Frank and Edith Witherall.

Moving to Nova Scotia as a young adult he met his wife of 55 years, Mabel (Wentzel) and started their married life and family while living and working on Cyrus Eaton’s Farm in East River. From some of the conversations we have heard, there were many good times on the farm and likely many stories that haven’t reached our ears. Fred and Mabel then moved to Deep Cove and Fred started his job at Farmers Dairy, retiring in 2004 after 30 plus years of service. As his family we are unsure if his love of ice cream motivated his employment at the dairy or the dairy created his love of ice cream.

Fred was very passionate and proud of his family and enjoyed many activities that involved time spent with his family. He enjoyed many gatherings with his family and extended family and could always trust he would have a big smile and hear his laughter at these gatherings. Fred made sure to share his passion for family with his children and grandchildren. Fred was fond of his granddaughters, so much so that each one of them have their own special name for him- Grampie, Gramps and Poppy. Fred was surrounded by his daughters for many years but then some son-in-laws joined the family line up. Fred was quiet many times and just had his laughter adding to the conversation but he did occasionally give the guys some words of wisdom for being happily married.

He was very active within his community and family until his passing. Fred was a dedicated member to the community having served 30 years on the board of directors at the Blandford Community Center and many of those as the Board Chairperson. Fred also served as a School Board Trustee of Blandford Elementary School. Both Fred and Mabel were recognized for their years of volunteer service at local and provincial levels. His interests outside of the community involved his love for camping and enjoyed watching sports on television.

He is survived and forever in the hearts of his wife, Mabel (Wentzel); daughters, Sandra (Gary) Rhodenzier, Anita (Colin) MacDonald, Tina (Randall Harnish) Witherall and granddaughters, Makayla (Emma Lake) Harnish, Marissa Harnish, Brianna MacDonald.

He is also survived by brothers, Frank “Murrice” (Beatrice) Witherall, Gordon Witherall, and sister, Rose (William) Blagdon; sister in law, Doris Witherall and predeceased by father, Frank Witherall; mother, Edith Witherall; brother, Clarence “Max” Witherall and sister in law, Emily Witherall. His love for family extended to those brought in by marriage and is survived by sister in laws, Florence Wentzel, Bonnie Medicraft Leary and brother/sister in law, Wilbert and Bonnie Wentzell and brother in law, Allen Foster. Predeceased by brother in laws, Roger Wentzel, Lowell Wentzel and sister in law, Pearl Foster. Also, he is survived by numerous nieces and nephews that held a special part in his family.

Fred’s family wish to thank all the staff at South Shore Regional hospital and QEII VG 8A. A special thank you to Dr. Heather Robertson and Dr. Forward for their compassionate care of both Fred and all his family.

A celebration of life will be held on Thursday September 1, 2022 at 11:00 at the Blandford Community Center. Donations may be made to the Blandford Community Center.
