Katherine (Kaye) Ethel Beanlands
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our much loved wife, sister, aunt and friend, Kaye, on March 15, 2019, in Camp Hill Veteran’s Hospital. Born in Glace Bay, she was the daughter of the late Harry and Effie (Matheson) Wadden. Kaye began her teaching career in Glace Bay. She then moved to Halifax where she taught at the School for the Deaf until she started teaching at Joseph Howe School, where she remained until her retirement in 1993. It was there that Kaye met the love of her life and best friend Leslie in 1963. They married in June 1965 and made their home in beautiful Seabright. Born to be a teacher, Kaye treated all of her students with respect and believed in each of them and in return they respected her. Known to her students as ‘Mrs. B’, she never lost her patience, raised her voice or grew frustrated with them. Kaye loved working in the same school as Les, and their colleagues were like family. For 45 years Kaye spent her summers at her cottage on the Mira River in Cape Breton, which was one of her favourite places in the entire world. The cottage was a place where all of her family would gather, sometimes having as many as 19 people sleeping under the same roof. Many summers included a good old-fashioned Cape Breton Kitchen Party where Kaye would smile and sing with delight surrounded by those who she loved most. Kaye lived a full life, travelling on vacations to California, England, Florida and parts of Canada and she loved her annual trips with Les to Ottawa to visit the Beanlands family. Kaye had an artistic flare and loved to sew, knit and make special crafts to decorate her house for each holiday. She loved attending live theatre and musical events and encouraged a love of arts in her nieces and nephews. She was also a great cook and baker and her family especially loved her famous Mud Pies. Having a very strong faith, Kaye was an active member of William Black United Church in Glen Margaret for over 50 years and loved her church family. She was always helping with fundraising dinners by baking pies, serving and doing whatever else was required. Kaye also served as Secretary of the William Black Cemetery Committee. Kaye was devoted to her family as a daughter, sister, wife, aunt and cousin. Nothing was more important to her than creating memories with her family and being present for everyone’s birthdays and special life events like anniversaries, recitals, graduations, weddings and she loved hosting the annual family Christmas Eve celebration. One of the greatest joys of the last two and a half years of Kaye’s life was her great nephew, Luke. Luke loved his ‘Aunt Taye’ and during the last few months of her life, her face lit up with delight when he would visit. Luke was always sensitive to how his great aunt was feeling and would offer his hand for holding, kisses and hugs and many stickers that he plastered on her bed and around her room that Kaye refused to have removed. Kaye is survived by her husband Leslie, sister Cheryl (Russell) Walker, sister-in-law Dorita Wadden, special cousin Eileen Wadden, brother-in-law David (Betty) Beanlands, brother-in-law Dr. Donald (Rhona) Beanlands. Nieces Shauna (Peter Hope) Wadden, Dale (Glen) Mosher, Laurel Walker and Dr. Heather (Dan) Beanlands. Nephews Darren (Lori Parker) Wadden, Jason (Michelle) Walker, Stuart Lacelle, Kevin (Krista) Beanlands, Steven Beanlands, Dr. Rob (Jenny) Beanlands, Bruce (Holly) Beanlands and Ian Beanlands. Also survived by numerous great nieces, great nephews and friends. Kaye was predeceased by her brother Stanley Wadden, sister-in-law Bette (and husband Chuck) Lacelle, niece Karen Francis and great nephew Cameron Hope (in infancy). Cremation has taken place under the direction of Ronald A. Walker Funeral Home, Upper Tantallon. A service of remembrance and celebration of Kaye’s life will be held on Saturday March 23, at 2:00 pm at William Black United Church, 10515 Peggy’s Cove Rd., (Hwy 333) in Glen Margaret. Rev. Paul Cumming officiating, assisted by Bill Hale. Reception to follow in the church hall. Family flowers only. Memorial donations to William Black United Church or a charity of your choice.
