On January 16, 2023 at the age of 80, Larry David Phillips left this world to be with his son Cyril (Rick). Larry was born in 1942 in Edmonton, Alberta, to Cyril and Ella Phillips. He attended public school and joined the Royal Canadian Navy in 1959. Larry moved to Nova Scotia and met the love of his life – Mary – whom he married in 1962. Together, they raised three sons: Rick, Dion, and Larry. Larry spent 35 years in the Navy and sailed the world. He served on many ships: Terra Nova, Bonaventure, Grandby, Margaree, Annapolis, Nipigon, Algonquin, and Preserver. He spent two years as CERA Sea Training, four years as COXN Fleet Maintenance Group Atlantic, and finished in Maritime Headquarters Halifax. Larry retired in 1995 as a Chief Petty Officer 1st Class, Marine Engineer. After retirement Larry dedicated over 20 years of his time at Tantallon Elementary School – where he became widely known as “Grampy”. He was always there for those who needed him, most of all his grandchildren. Larry is preceded in death by his father (Cyril) and mother (Ella), his brother (Ross), and his son (Rick). He is survived by his wife of 60 years (Mary) and their two sons Dion (Denise) and Larry (Judith). He is also survived by his brothers (Darrel, Bruce) and sisters (Ruth, Dorothy), all of Alberta. Finally, he is survived by his wonderful grandchildren (Joel, Ben, Rhiannon, and Bianca). A public memorial service will be held at 11:00 am on Thursday, January 26, 2023 in the Ronald A. Walker Funeral Home, 13549 Peggy’s Cove Road, Upper Tantallon. Should friends desire, memorial contributions may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia.
