Obituary for Michael Ross McGinnis

Michael Ross McGinnis

Age 67 of Halifax It is with sadness that we announce Michael’s passing on March 6, 2022. He is survived by his ex-wife and friend Lemin Li (Halifax), step-son Mike (Mai, BC) McGinnis, sister Colleen (David Arnold, Stillwater Lake), brother Paul (BC), nieces Cynthia Arnold-Jobes (Gary, Kingston) and Regan McGinnis (BC), nephews Kyle Arnold (Stephanie, Bedford) and Aaron McGinnis (BC), great-niece Lily Jobes and great-nephews CJ Jobes and Benjamin Arnold.

After serving in the Canadian Armed Forces at various locations in Canada and Germany, and teaching in China, Michael returned to Nova Scotia and worked with the Canadian Corp of Commissionaires, most recently at Dalhousie University. He was a dedicated member of the Red Cross’ Humanitarian Workforce and was proud to serve on its Fort McMurray, Tropical Storm Arthur, and Manitoba First Nations Wildfire and Shelter responses. His recent deployments included COVID testing at the St. Stephens, NB/USA border and serving at Nova Scotia’s long-term care facilities and vaccination clinics.

A co-worker at the Red Cross described Michael as “a kind soul whose calm demeanor and gentle approach helped put beneficiaries, long-term care residents and people about to get their COVID needle at ease”. Another co-worker said he was “a good man whose story-telling and patience and determination to do good in the last years of his life will be missed”. What greater legacy can any of us hope for?

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, March 15, at St. Marguerite Bourgeoys Catholic Church, 10 Scholars Rd., Tantallon. For those wishing to attend online, please go to the church’s website: http://holyapostlesparish.com/ and click on the icon “Sunday Mass Stream”. The live stream will be at the top of the videos.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Cancer Society and Red Cross.
