Obituary for Peter John Russell

On December 17, 2018, Peter passed away peacefully at the Windsor Elms Village in Falmouth, NS at the age of 86.
Peter grew up in Sydney, NS – son of John and Doreen Russell. He moved to Halifax and ultimately Tantallon with his wife Mary (Doxey) in the early 1960s; and has long been a fixture in the local community, at the hockey rink, at the ballfield and even rallying around Nova Scotia with his skilled navigator (Mary). He was an avid photographer and enjoyed capturing the beauty of Nova Scotia and his family, as well as taking photos for his many teams and social groups. Peter carried a love of sailing through his life, including numerous adventures around the coastline of Nova Scotia, and spent his retirement years repairing and maintaining the boats he so enjoyed for himself and others. Peter was predeceased by Mary and his parents, and is survived by his sister Ann, of Sault Ste. Marie; his daughter and son-in-law Bridget and Marc Adams, and his granddaughter Iona, all of Tantallon, and his best friend Dawn Dockrill, Seabright. Peter was never interested in a sombre funeral service or visitation. To honour his wishes, a celebration of his long and happy life is planned for January 19, 2019 from 1 to 4 p.m. at the St. Margaret Sailing Club in Glen Haven, NS, where he spent many years as an active member. In the meantime, messages to the family or remembrances of Peter can be sent through www.rawalker.ca. Bridget would like to sincerely thank the wonderful staff of the Seabright Resthome and Windsor Elms who made her father’s last year so comfortable. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the local branches of the Heart and Stroke Foundation or Alzheimer’s Society.
