Obituary

Ralph Tingley
Age 85, of Glen Haven, passed away peacefully in Shoreham Village, Chester, on Friday, November 29, 2019. He was predeceased by mother, Eva (Ayer); father, Harold; sisters, Ruth (Mitchell), Shirley (Temple), Helen (Dowell); and first wife Valerie, (Lunn). He is survived by wife, Julie (Duffus); children, Deborah Gue (Randy), Vancouver; Geoffrey (Sarah), Crousetown; Stephen, Halifax; Robert (Cynthia), Aurora, Ont.; Diane Hopper (Steven), Centreville; and grandchildren, Lauren, Scott, Anna Louise, Amanda (Scott), Jason, Danielle, Carlie (Shawn), Sara, Jennifer (Eric), Joseph, Victoria, Rachel; great-grandchildren, Alexander and Avery; and numerous nieces and nephews. Ralph was born in Halifax and spent many years in broadcasting (radio and television), and later, the insurance industry. He had a lifelong love of music, which he passed on to all of his children. Ralph was accomplished in trumpet and euphonium, playing in several bands since his school days. He loved to sing with the Chebuctones, the Bay Chorale and his church choir at St. Luke's. He was very active in the sailing community and built a lovely schooner "Sybarite" in mother Eva's backyard in the North End of Halifax. Later, he came into possession of the historic 1905 schooner "Adare" which provided many years of racing and cruising with wife Julie and his family. He was past commodore of the Nova Scotia Schooner Association. Ralph had a real gift for building, creating, and innovating and his family will cherish many related memories. His charm, keen sense of humor, and beautiful voice will be greatly missed. The family would like to extend sincere appreciation to the kind staff of Shoreham Village. Memorial contributions in memory of Ralph made to shorehamfoundation.ca, heartandstroke.ca, alzheimer.ca, or a charity of your choice are appreciated by the family. Cremation has taken place and the service will be on Saturday, December 7th at 10 a.m. in St. Luke's United Church in Upper Tantallon. Reception to follow. Ralph and Julie shared themselves with all. As a sailing competitor Ralph was a force to reckoned with. Ashore he brought a smile with good company. What you saw was what you got. You always knew when Ralph was present. His booming voice will be missed but not forgotten.

Dear Steve, my condolences to you and your family with the passing of your father, Ralph. I met your father only a couple of years ago. You visited him every week and were always willing to help out with property maintenance. You would tell me each time your sisters and brothers from afar would visit your father and mother. It was evident to me that your family was very close and very loving toward your parents. That love and closeness will help you mourn your loss and later, with happy memories

Dear Julie:

Please know that I was very sad to read about Ralph's passing. I'm a member of the Chebucto Community Singers as was Ralph. You always held my purse when we were performing - I thank you.

Blessings,

Julie So sorry to hear of Ralph's passing. I have many fond memories from the the 40 odd years that Ralph and I worked together, built boats, sailed inshore and offshore .
