Obituary for Rhoda Irene Tupper

Rhoda Irene Tupper
Rhoda Irene Tupper

Treasured mother, grandmother and great-grandmother passed away at home on August 19th 2018, surrounded by the love of her family. While Rhoda was born in New Germany to Hurd and Eva (Gates) Lantz December 13th 1928, she adopted Head of Saint Margaret's Bay as home when she was welcomed into the Tupper family. She arrived in this community at the tender age of 20 as the new teacher, with a year of Normal College and 2 years of teaching in one room school houses behind her. After a whirlwind courtship, she married Reg and from then on devoted herself to her family, church and community. Rhoda was a natural at teaching and she returned to this as a substitute teacher at the little schools on the hill with five children at home and her youngest only four years old. She was accomplished at many things- sewing, knitting, smocking and baking- and was a tireless and loving caregiver for her family. Rhoda possessed a great zest for living. Whenever she heard a rousing tune, her toe would start tapping. She loved to read, enjoyed travel and was a great organizer who volunteered for many community groups and causes. Her ACW friends and Eastern Star sisters were especially important to her.

Rhoda will be deeply missed by her five children: Pam, Nancy (Gary Sandover), Jill (Jim Dunsworth), Ann and Garth (Jacqui), thirteen grandchildren: Patrick (Hannah Brillinger), Katie (Ken Crooks), Kelly (Ian Dawson), Christopher (Chelsea Sampson), Stephen, Maggie, Ryan (Dan Norton), Adam, Kristen, Kelsie, Jacob, Jessi and Jonah, and six great-grandchildren: Rowan, Kiera, Charlie, Olive, Liam and Sabine, all of whom gave her great joy. She also leaves behind two sisters: Audrey (Ken) Fram (Halifax) and Muriel Slauenwhite (Stanbourne), and many nieces and nephews who she dearly loved. She was preceeded in death by her husband of almost 64 years, Reg, and siblings Kenneth Lantz (Liverpool), Ruth Lohnes (Dartmouth) and Dorothy Langille (New Germany).

The family wishes to express heartfelt thanks to Dr Maria Lang, who provided kindness and care throughout many years, the Palliative care team at the QEII, especially Devon Hennigar, and the Lions Club. A Celebration of Life will be held at St. Georges Anglican Church in Head of Saint Margaret's Bay on Friday, August 24th at 11:00am. Online condolences may be made to www.rawalker.ca. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St Georges Anglican Church or the St Margaret's Bay Lions Club.
