Obituary for Ruth Ann Blakney

Ruth Ann "Sanny" Blakney
83, of Hubbards, passed away at home on Friday, August 30, 2019. Born in Edmunston, New Brunswick, she was the daughter of the late Donald and Ruth (Keans) Blakney.

While Sanny was born in New Brunswick she was raised in Hubbards which remained her home wherever she lived. She was educated at Shatford Memorial School and Provincial Normal School(Teacher’s College) in Truro. She taught for a year in Halifax and then returned to Hubbards to teach in Simm’s Settlement School and Shatford Memorial. She moved to Fort Smith, North West Territories to teach for the 1966-67 school year. She taught there until 1995 when she had completed 35 years as a teacher. She returned full time to Hubbards in 2010 and resided once again in the family home.

She immersed herself in community becoming very involved in her church, as she had been in Fort Smith. She was a Licensed Lay Minister, active in Anglican Church Women, Outreach, Children’s summer camp and many other areas. One of her great passions was the annual variety show which she organized, directed and participated in even while living in the North, following in her late mother’s footsteps. Another passion was the Terry Fox Run, walking and raising funds. She organized the Hubbards Happy Gang to provide monthly entertainment for the residents of Shoreham Village. She was an enthusiastic supporter of community activities even when she was not directly involved. Sanny sponsored children through Plan Canada for over 15 years.

She loved people. Her home was always open and welcoming to all whether to share food or to share fun. She loved to cook and share old South Shore recipes. From brown bread to hodge podge to turnip kraut, no one ever went hungry at Sanny’s.

She loved animals. There was always food and a soft cushion for the neighbours’ cats. She fed all the wild things she could entice to her house.

Her love and generosity was appreciated by the community as shown by the numbers of people who came together at a recent gathering where she was awarded the first Perpetual Good Citizen Award by the Hubbards Heritage Society and recognized by The Terry Fox Foundation for her outstanding support over 30 years. Many spoke of the love she demonstrated for the community and its people over many years.

She is survived by her son, Todd Walsh, Fort Smith, NWT; brothers, Bill, Auburn, Alabama; Brian, Fort Smith, NWT; sister-in-law, Darrell, Hubbards; grandchildren, Christopher, Julia, Cory, Jordee, Angela, Celeste and Charlene; great grandchildren, Phoenix, Jagger, Ava, Ryker, Rebecca, and Bryklin; nieces, Dawn Marie and Carol Lynn; nephew, Warren; and a host of friends.
