Shirley C. Conley
95, died Sunday, March 14th 2021. Born in Windsor, N.S. in 1925, she was the daughter of Clarence and Josephine Haley (best parents ever). Predeceased by her husband, Don, sister, Ruby, brothers Alan and Earl, she is survived by her sons, David (Nancy), Kevin (Patsy), granddaughters, Tess (Kat) and Samantha. Shirley moved to Truro in 1947 where she and Ruby helped open radio station CKCL. She met her husband, Don at that time. Later they moved to Sydney and had two sons, David and Kevin. From there they moved to New Glasgow (met friend Audrey) and then Bedford where she lived for 52 wonderful years. After Don’s passing, Shirley worked as a real estate agent for 23 years. Shirley belonged to Bedford United Church where she was an elder and on the Board of Stewards. Later she became a member of the Fireside Unit (what a joy). She loved playing bridge with her bridge partner of 42 years, Ann Macvicar, and made many lifelong friends through various bridge clubs. Shirley was a member of the Bedford Seniors and Bedford Horticultural Clubs. Special thanks to Ruth Jay for her friendship and kindness over the years.
She loved her granddaughters but her sons, David and Kevin, were her life.
The above was written by our mother; it demonstrates her typical no nonsense approach to life. The fact is she was the best mother, mother-in-law and grandmother anyone could have. When our father died, he left a young family. Mom became a single parent in the true sense of the word and went from stay at home mother to full time working parent in a flash. As teenage boys we were blissfully unaware of the daily challenges she faced. Shirley provided us with a safe place to land and we always felt loved. This love was extended to our expanded families. Losing her is heartbreaking. We take comfort knowing she is going to be with our father, the true love of her life, along with her siblings and parents.
Cremation has taken place. A celebration of Shirley’s life will be held for family and friends at a date to be announced.
