Obituary for Susan Meers

Susanna Meers (nee Barter) passed away Sunday October 2nd 2022 at the age of 90. Susan was a strong woman who loved her family and treasured her friends. She always had a kind word for everyone. Those who knew her loved her for her sweet disposition.

Susan, a true Newfoundlander came from the small island of Cape La Hune off the southern shore of Newfoundland which was accessible only by boat. She left home at 16 to accept a position at the Victoria General Hospital as a switchboard operator and from there went to the United Shoe Machinery Corporation in Boston MA. Susan met her late husband Tom through mutual friends and their life together began as husband and wife in 1961. We always enjoyed the stories she would tell us about Cape La Hune. She was adventurous unbeknownst to us and probably others because of her demur nature. We actually have a picture of her in a wet suit coming out of the cold ocean not something I thought my mother would do!

Susan was devoted to her family. We were fortunate to have mom home with us when we were young keeping the family strong while dad worked two jobs to support the family. She was a god-fearing woman. She loved to fish and was a great cook. Susan is survived by her two daughters Sandra Meers and Brenda Hughes (née Meers), her grandson Callam, son in law Tony, her sister Ruby and many nieces and nephews.

A special thank you to the staff at Shoreham Village in Chester and Soldiers Memorial Hospital in Middleton for their loving care and support. all the neighbors and friends in Middleton, Hubbards and Annapolis Royal Nova Scotia whose love and support is unsurpassed. The family would also like to extend their sincerest gratitude towards Walkers Funeral Home for being very accommodating and understanding during this difficult time.

There will be no memorial service at this time. The family requests that in lieu of flowers and cards, donations be made to the Canadian Cancer Society and the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada.
