Obituary for Thomas Joseph Benson

Thomas Joseph Benson

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved husband, Father and Pépère, Thomas (Tom) Joseph Benson. He passed away peacefully in his sleep at the QEII Hospital on February13th surrounded by his loving wife Giséle, daughter Michelle and son Alderic.

Born December 1, 1941 in Halifax, Nova Scotia; he was the son of Eva Blanche Benson. He is survived by his wife of 55 years Giséle (Bourgeois), daughter Michelle Benson (Michael Slack) son, Alderic Benson (Anne), grandsons Jack and Derek. Sisters, Donna Lee, Linda Guthrie-Lee (Larry), and Judy Lee; brothers, Jack Lee (Germaine), David Lee, Leo Lee (Cathy) and Tommy Lee (Judy), and many nieces, nephews, sisters/brother-in-law’s and of course his “favorites”. Tom was predeceased by his mother Eva, step father Leo Lee; brothers Roger, Dennis and Wayne Lee, and his sisters Sheila Lee, Barbara Sturge, and Pauline Mantley.

Tom was a larger-than-life family man, entrepreneur, the “go to” neighborhood handyman / family support person and the life of the party. His most important superpower was how he made everyone in his presence feel special, loved and welcome. If you knew Tom, you knew you were his favorite and if you were one of his nieces or nephews, you knew that Uncle Tom or “Mon Oncle Brown Bag” would have a sweet treat for you.

Tom grew up and lived in the HRM (Timberlea, Upper Tantallon, Seabright and Bedford) all his life and has collected a large number of friends and favorites. He founded and ran B&B Security Locksmithing Ltd with is partner Albert Boudreau from 1974 to 1999 when he retired early to enjoy life with his wife Giséle. Over his retirement years, you could find Tom working on projects, spending his summers in NB with Giséle and the Bourgeois family or playing Crib on Thursday nights with friends and neighbours. Tom deeply loved and was very proud of his children and enjoyed spending time with their families and in particular spoiling his grandsons Jack and Derek.

A Visitation and Celebration of Life will be held at the Ronald A. Walker Funeral Home, 13549 Highway 333, Peggy’s Cove Road, Upper Tantallon, NS B0J 1T0. Visitation will be held from 3pm to 6pm on Feb 22nd and the Celebration of Life and reception will commence at 1pm on Feb 23rd. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Tom’s name to the Canadian Cancer Society or The Salvation Army.
