In January, 2013, I began visiting Layton once a week, as a volunteer at the Mahone Bay Nursing Home, and he quickly became an important person in my life, and someone I considered a friend.

You could not find two people with more different lives than Layton and me, but as everyone who knew him will be aware, his favourite things in life were ‘the good old woods and the wildlife’, a sentiment I share, so that’s where we started. Also, he liked listening to stories, and I like to read aloud, so each week we’d share a story, and then we would chat. Together we read more than ten complete books, at the rate of one or two chapters a week, almost all of them featuring animals.

But Layton was a great story teller, too, and he amazed me with his memory for details and his ability to be entertaining. I love cats, and he told me their cat once brought a snake into the house and let it go on his mom’s clean laundry. She screeched and threw the snake, clean clothes and all, right out the door onto the dirt! A typical, delightful Layton story.

Each time I went to visit Layton he’d say, “I’m more than glad to see you,” and that always touched my heart. I was more than glad to see him too. He was a kind, gentle soul with a heart of gold who had lived a hard life, in my opinion. I miss him.
